No major setback in Shoranur, says Pinarayi

Special Correspondent

Says some party workers were misled; unholy alliance will be defeated

Calls for joint response against RSS, NDF

Says his party is not against

private capital

THALASSERY: Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the party has not faced any major setback at Shoranur and vowed to defeat the “unholy alliance” between party dissidents and the United Democratic Front (UDF).

Talking to the media here on Tuesday, Mr. Vijayan said the electoral defeat of party candidates in the recent byelection to eight seats in the Shoranur municipality was not an irreversible setback. Those who had left the party pulled off the victory with the help of the UDF, which exposed its own weakness by entering into an alliance with CPI(M) dissidents.

The situation there would change by the next election, he said.

Observing that some party workers at Shoranur were misled, Mr. Vijayan said the party would correct its workers.

Taking organisational measures to correct misled workers was natural in the party, and no such actions in the past were known to have had any adverse impact on the party. Such actions in fact strengthened the party, he added.

To a question on the demand for a ban on the National Development Front (NDF), Mr. Vijayan said that no organisation could be eliminated by banning it.

The NDF had grown into an organisation through communal mobilisation. When the minorities had been victims of communal riots, some elements in the minority community had

entertained the idea of having an organisation similar to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he said adding that the NDF had been formed with such a logic. He called for joint response of all sections of people against the RSS and the NDF.

The CPI(M) leader said in response to another query that the party was not against private capital as long as it served the interests of the State.
