Maldives invites India to pick up stakes in PSUs

NEW DELHI: Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, on his maiden visit here after being elected to the top job, has invited Indian Industry to pick up stakes in Maldives government-owned industries in the areas of electricity, construction, water, sanitation, transport and fisheries.

Mr. Nasheed, no stranger to India, arrived here on Tuesday and met United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi and later interacted with Ambassadors and High Commissioners accredited to Maldives but stationed here. After a ceremonial welcome on Wednesday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, he would lay a wreath at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi. The Maldives President would interact with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. A few agreements are also slated to be signed. He will also call on President Pratibha Patil before leaving for Male on Thursday.

Addressing businessmen, Mr. Nasheed also sought India’s partnership in building airports in Maldives and stressed the need for increasing the two-way trade manifoldAddressing a joint business meeting under joint aegis of ASSOCHAM, CII and FICCI, Mr. Nasheed said both countries could work together on tourism, HRD, education, healthcare and hotel sectors.
