K.M. Varghese centenary

Thiruvananthapuram: The Mahakavi Edayaranmula K.M. Varghese Memorial Trust is celebrating the birth centenary of the poet, prose writer, linguist, teacher nonpareil and orator in a grand manner.

The celebrations will get under way with a centenary conference to be inaugurated by Puthussery Ramachandran, writer, in the Press Club Hall here on Friday. D. Babu Paul, former Additional Chief Secretary, will preside.

Vellayani Arjunan, writer, will deliver the commemoration lecture.

K.M. Varghese, born in the Kunnumpurathu family at Edayaranmula in 1908, had worked as teacher and headmaster in Malayalam, English and training schools for 32 years after taking his B.A. in mathematics from the Madras University and LT from the University of Kerala.

He had served as a sub-editor in the Malayala Maha Nikhandu for 15 years.

He is a recipient of several awards, including the Mahakavi Simon Memorial Award and the Mooloor Award.
