Forum seeks action against illegal constructions

‘Streamline functioning of Town Planning Department’

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Building Designers Organisation (KBDO) has urged the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation to take action against unauthorised constructions and encroachments on public land.

A press note quoting KBDO president Kowdiar Harikumar and general secretary Mahesh K. Pillai alleged that the civic body had failed to act against illegal constructions in the Fort area and both banks of Karamana and Killi Rivers. “It has also turned a blind eye to buildings encroaching on government land,” it added.

Calling for urgent steps to streamline the functioning of the Town Planning Department, the press note said the one-day building permit scheme had failed to achieve its objective due to the lack of initiative on part of a section of officials.

“Even though the government had issued an order making the system applicable for extension and alteration of buildings, some officials have refused to abide by it,” it said.

The press note alleged that officials and agents had monopolised the Town Planning section in the Corporation office, making it difficult for applicants to secure permits. “Officials often create confusion in building rules and cash in on the situation. Plans submitted by touts and big builders are given priority over those submitted by approved building designers,” it noted. Hailing the Mayor’s decision to streamline the issue of building permits and check the operation of touts, the KBDO said the reforms were long overdue.
