Jewellery stolen

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: A suitcase containing gold jewellery weighing about 40 sovereigns was reportedly stolen from a private bus on its way to Chennai from Coimbatore.

Belarmine (43), a resident of Sundaram Colony in East Tambaram, was a civil engineer and had taken a building contract in Coimbatore and was living there.

He was returning to East Tambaram for Christmas and had boarded the private bus in Coimbatore on Monday evening. He had kept gold jewellery weighing about 40 sovereigns in a suitcase and placed it in the luggage box in the rear of the bus. When they got down at Tambaram on Tuesday morning, they could not locate the suitcase. When asked to take the bus to Tambaram police station, the bus crew said roads leading to the police station were too narrow and took the bus instead to Chromepet police station.

Initially, personnel at Chromepet hesitated to accept the complaint as the crime was noticed in Tambaram, but lodged a case later. The scene of crime — the spot where the suitcase was stolen — had to be established first. It could have taken place in any of the places between Coimbatore and Tambaram, police added.
