Nagarjuna Reddy, 17, allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a running train College principal allegedly insulted him in front of other students over a trivial issue
KAVALI (NELLORE DIST): Leaders of various students unions and praja sangams observed a bandh in the town on Wednesday protesting the alleged suicide of an intermediate student Vemareddy Nagarjuna Reddy (17) of a private college. The students organised rallies and staged rasta rokos at several places demanding action against the college management and the police lathicharge on the protestors on Tuesday. A first-year intermediate student, Nagarjuna Reddy, 17, who was missing since Monday evening allegedly committed suicide by jumping jumping in front of a running train. The body was found on the tracks on Tuesday morning. Reddy resorted to the extreme step as the principal of the college beat him before other students and insulted him over a petty issue, said the college students. On Monday, Nagarjuna Reddy did not returned home after the college and his parents searched for him. The locals informed that Reddy’s body was found on the tracks. The victim’s parents -- Malayadri Reddy and Vijayamma – alleged that the college management was harassing their son for the past few months as he complained about the poor quality of food being served in the college mess. The students led by PDSU and SFI and the relatives of Nagarjuna Reddy staged a dharna in front of the college demanding the arrest of the principal. When the management did not respond, the students raised slogans against the principal and tried to barge into the college. Mild tension prevailed in the town for a few hours when the students led by SFI, PDSU, Mala Mahanadu and other organisations took out a rally and staged a rasta roko at bus stand centre on Wednesday. They burnt the ‘effigy’ of the college management and demanded the suspension of Circle Inspector, who resorted to lathicharge on the students. Speaking to The Hindu, Government Railway Police (GRP) Circle Inspector P. Narasimha Raju said that a case under Section 174 CrPc (suspicious death) has been registered and the case would to transferred to Kavali.
