French honours for V-Cs

The Vice-Chancellors of two key institutions in the Capital have been honoured for their service.

B.B. Bhattacharya, Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and his counterpart at Jamia Millia Islamia, Mushirul Hasan, have been conferred with the highest French Civilian Award “Officer of the Order of Academic Palms” (Officier da ns l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the Prime Minister of France.

The honour is one of the oldest civil distinctions. The Order was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808 as an award for devotion and accomplishment in the areas of teaching and research.

Today the Academic Palms honours those who, like Prof. Bhattacharya and Prof. Hasan, have rendered important services to French national education and contributed to the intellectual, scientific and artistic influence of France in the world.

Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has announced the schedule of its Common Entrance Tests (CETs) for the academic session 2009-10.

The University will be holding 26 CETs for making admissions to almost 50 academic programmes, like BBA, BCA, Master of Mass Media, B.A. LLB (Hons.), B.Ed., MBA, B.Tech., and M.Sc. (Environment Management).

The CETs will be conducted for admitting about 14,000 students to various courses offered by the University at its 10 University Schools of Studies and over 90 affiliated colleges.

The University is planning to conduct the CETs for four of its most sought-after courses -- MBA, MBBS, B.Tech. and MCA -- at 10 cities across the country. For rest of the courses, the entrance exams will be held only in Delhi.

The Department of Mass Media and Mass Communication at Indraprastha College for Women at Delhi University celebrated 10 years of its establishment this past weekend.

The college hosted the first alumnae meet of the Department, who shared their memories of college life and spoke on their experiences as professionals.

Several films from the previous batches were screened. A film tracing the growth of the Department through the decade, “We dreamt, we visualised and we realised” was also screened.

The 10th annual seminar “Meet the Media” was held during the celebration and an acclaimed set of panelists, including Vinod Dua, Prahlad Kakkar, Lillete Dubey, Rajeev Masand, and Paranjoy Guha Thakurta deliberated on “Lights Camera Action: Sense or Sensation?”

An on-the-spot cartoon making competition and an inter-college media quiz were also organised.

While presenting the Muslim outlook on different issues, it was imperative to keep in mind the secular traditions of India, said Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University P.K. Abdul Azis at the release function of English monthly “Islam, Muslims and the World”.

The monthly will be edited by noted writer and journalist Javed Jamil.

“AMU should actively take part in a healthy debate on various issues. Indian Muslims are as nationalist as the people of any other community. We should strive to keep up the golden traditions of tolerance and mutual understanding,” Prof. Azis said.

Faculty member Shakeel Samadani, who was the coordinator of the function, urged the AMU community to subscribe to the magazine.

Institute of Clinical Research (India), (ICRI) has appointed A.K. Nair as its Chief Operating Officer.

Mr. Nair brings to the table rich experience of over 28 years in the corporate world and has worked in several multi-national companies.

In his new role, he will be responsible for expanding ICRI operations throughout the country and globally.
