dated December 25, 1958: Peace and tolerance

Prime Minister Nehru on December 24 appealed for the acceptance by the world of the ideals of Visva Bharati – peace, tolerance and universal brotherhood. Addressing the annual convocation of Visva Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore and of which he is the Chancellor, Mr. Nehru told the students: “The world is being swept away in certain directions – sometimes good and sometimes bad. Although you may talk of peace, there is little peace or peaceful behaviour in the world which, on the other hand, is full of preparations for war, although no one wants war.” If the world accepted the ideals of Visva Bharati, then it could help lessen tension in the present-day world, Mr. Nehru said.
