Consumer fora in rural districts not being properly utilised

HYDERABAD: The State government should persuade the Centre to start South Indian Bench of National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Hyderabad, suggested Vemula Gowrisankar, chairman of State Federation of Consumers’ Associations.

He was among the many consumer rights activists who voiced their opinions at National Consumer Day celebrations conducted here by Department of Consumer Affairs, Food and Civil Supplies on Wednesday. The theme of this year’s celebrations was ‘Be Alert and Stay Safe’.

Suggestions

The function turned out to be a venue for the activists to put forth their suggestions for better implementation of consumer protection laws. The activists demanded the government to strengthen the hands of consumer associations by supporting them with funds and patronage.

Responding to the appeals, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Legal Metrology and Consumer Affairs Kasu Krishna Reddy said the government would take all necessary steps to revive the activities of consumer protection councils and associations. He also assured that details of stock and prices would be displayed at all general shops, malls and ration shops on tricolour boards by January 1. He gave away prizes to the winners of school and college level contests, which were conducted on the topic of ‘Consumer Protection Act-1986’.

State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission president D. Appa Rao said the consumer fora in rural districts were not being properly utilised.

Commissioner and Director of the Civil Supplies Department Sanjay Jaju and M. Subramanyam respectively and president of Hyderabad District Consumer Information Centre C.V.L. Narasimha Rao were among those present on the occasion.
