Special Correspondent

Voluntary forums ready to mobilise public support: workshop

TIRUCHI: Mobilising community support was essential for the success of solid and liquid waste management programmes, observed speakers at a dissemination workshop on decentralised solid and liquid waste management here on Thursday.

Over 30 executive officers of town panchayats in Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Ariyalur and Perambalur districts and representatives of voluntary organisations such as Inner Wheel, Lions, Rotary and Civic Exnoras participated in the programme. The workshop sought to motivate local communities towards adopting scientific solid and liquid waste management practices in a decentralised manner. Exnora will play the role of a facilitator.

As far as solid waste management was concerned, segregation of garbage at source was the key. Exnora and other voluntary organisations were willing to partner local bodies for community mobilisation, said T. Vijay Anand, Project Coordinator, Exnora International.

M. Elangovan, former Rotary District Governor, who presided over, said Rotary International could offer financial support for liquid or solid waste management programmes taken in rural/ town panchayats areas. Such projects can also be funded under the Matching Grants scheme.

The Assistant Director of Town Panchayats, Tiruchi, T.Thiruvengadam, said effective mobilisation of the community was vital for the success of such programmes.

The Musiri Town Panchayat, which has already implemented community-based decentralised waste management systems, was emerging as a model for all town panchayats in the state.

V.Ganapathy, Liasion Officer, Exnora, explained the working of the decentralised waste water treatment models established in Musiri and Tiruchi by the Exnora International, in coordination with the local bodies.

G.Subramanian, President, Tiruchi District Exnora, emphasised the role of stake holders in waste management programmes. C.Balasubramanian, Secretary, Tiruchi District Exnora, and others spoke.
