Encroachment eviction halted
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu on Wednesday said that the drive against eviction of encroachments on some water bodies near Tambaram was halted for the time being.
Talking to reporters after a review meeting with officials of different government departments, elected representatives and members of civic groups, Mr. Baalu, who is South Chennai Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had agreed to a request made by him on the problems faced by those whose property was being demolished. Until alternative housing sites were identified and land distributed to them, the eviction operation would be halted.
Mr. Baalu said that more than 1,000 families had been living 50 to 60 years near some water bodies where the government agencies had planned to carry out eviction. About 1.5 cents of land would be given to each of the families who would be displaced by the eviction.
