Man dies in custody

BANGALORE: A person accused of theft allegedly committed suicide inside the Hanumanthanagar Police Station on Thursday. While case of custodial death has been registered with the police, the investigation will be handed over to the Corps of Detectives (CoD).

The police gave the name of the accused as Bhaskar (30). The body has been kept at the Victoria Hospital where postmortem will be conducted. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) M.R. Pujar and Inspector-General of Police, Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, Bipin Gopalakrishna, visited the hospital on Thursday night.

According to police, residents of Kalidasa Layout handed over Bhaskar to their custody on Wednesday evening on charges of theft. The accused allegedly used to steal coins from coin telephone booths in Kalidasa Layout and Srinivasanagar.

Despite complaints to police since four months, action was not taken. Hence the people kept a vigil and apprehended the accused on Wednesday. After giving a sound thrashing, they handed him over to the police.

The police said since a majority of the personnel were on security duty for Christmas, no inquiry was conducted against Bhaskar.

He was not kept in the lockup, the police said. When alone, Bhaskar entered a room and hanged himself with his shirt, the police claimed.

Land dealer murdered

A small time political worker and land dealer was hacked to death by three persons in Basavanagudi police limits on Thursday evening. The police gave the name of the victim as Sadiq Pasha, 32, resident of Lakkasandra.

He was attacked allegedly by Aslam Pasha and two associates when he was moving with Saravana near Bharati Nursing Home when the incident took place.

DVDs seized

The Fraud and Misappropriation Wing of CCB raided two shops on Wednesday and busted a racket selling pirated DVDs and VCDs, and recovered pirated discs estimated at Rs. 1.9 lakh.
