KAKINADA: An 11-member gang pilfering petroleum products from Visakhapatnam-Secunderabad pipeline of HPCL was nabbed near Mallesala area of Jaggampeta mandal of East Godavari district by a police team led by probationary DSP L. Subbarayudu and Razole Circle Inspector D.S. Chaitanya Krishna in the early hours of Friday. A tanker used to transport the contraband, 200 litres of oil and a device that drills holes in the pipeline were seized. Disclosing this in a press conference here, Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy said diesel, petrol, naphtha and kerosene were being stolen by making holes in the pipeline using a mechanical device, on a sizable scale from 2005. About 1,50,000 litres worth about Rs. 50 lakh is estimated to have been pilfered since then. The oil theft could have resulted in a disaster as a slight mistake in drawing the oil could have caused a major explosion.. Venkatarami Reddy of Proddutur in Kadapa district is the kingpin in whose bank account transactions worth Rs. 16 lakh were detected.
