Triumph of democracy

This refers to the editorial “Democracy triumphs” (Dec. 26). Happy days are ahead for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. By participating in the State Assembly elections in a big way, they have proved that the ballot is more powerful than the bullet. They have voted for peace, prosperity and a secure future. The increase in the voter turnout points to an increase in the people’s awareness on the importance of democracy.

U.T.R. Sridhar Prasad,

Secunderabad

The people of J&K deserve to be praised for demonstrating their preference for democracy and dealing a death blow to the separatist forces in the State. The Government of India should acknowledge the positive attitude of the people and focus on genuine, development-oriented governance.

Paingannan Senthil Kumar,

Gurgaon

The high voter turnout in the Assembly elections is the last nail in the coffin of the forces of ‘azadi.’ It is clear that the people of J&K believe in democracy and want to remain part of India.

The Election Commission, which took a risk by deciding to hold the elections, and the security forces deserve all praise for conducting the elections in a free and fair manner.

A. Jainulabdeen,

The interest shown by the people of J&K in fulfilling their democratic responsibility is praiseworthy. They have set the stage for forward movement by participating in large numbers in the well-conducted historic election. The government that comes to power should endeavour to improve the educational and economic condition of the people so that they grow stronger in their resolve to defeat the vested interests.

Masooma Khaleel,

Ambur

The high voter turnout in each of the seven phases of elections in J&K is indeed praiseworthy. The people have demonstrated in no uncertain terms their faith in the democratic process. The successful conduct of the election is a rebuff to the subversive elements that were keen on throttling the democratic process and a clear victory for the people of the State.

R. Sampath,

Chennai

There is no substitute for a free and fair election in upholding the spirit of democracy. The secessionists can be effectively isolated if the political class sheds its prejudices. The people of J&K have shown the way. It is now the turn of the new government to deliver.

D.V.G. Sankararao,

Vizianagaram

The Election Commission and the Centre deserve all praise for their decision to hold elections to the J&K Assembly, and for conducting them successfully in a phased manner. The peaceful conclusion of the election reiterates that terrorism can be defeated by coordinated government action and the people’s cooperation.

A.S. Adikesavan,

Chennai
