Meat and Poultry Processing Board approved

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Friday gave its nod for constituting a National Meat and Poultry Processing Board which would be headquartered in Delhi. An amount of Rs. 14.64 crore has been allocated for the purpose.

At the same time, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the continuation and funding of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), as also a scheme for Development of Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture and a National Scheme of Welfare of Fishermen during the eleventh plan period.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh chaired the meetings.

Autonomous body

The Ministry of Food Processing Industries will register the National Meat and Poultry Processing Board (NMPPB) as an autonomous body under the Societies Act. It is aimed at boosting growth of the sector while benefiting the producers and the processors.

The Board will provide help to the industry in setting up / modernization of abattoirs by providing technical consultancy for production of hygienic meat and meat products and for utilisation of slaughterhouse wastes to prepare value added animal by-products.

In addition, it will help industry with harmonisation of domestic standards with international norms and for developing uniform meat quality testing system with special attention to environmental pollution issues.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) would be provided Rs.2051.98 crore for the Eleventh Plan period with 100 per cent funding from the Centre for different activities including salary of the staff, development of training infrastructure and stay facility for the farmers and mobility of the staff to the villages for dissemination of technology and extension services.

The government had approved for establishment of 667 such centres in the rural districts including in the newly created districts.
