‘Poor healthcare a concern in rural Koraput’

Staff Reporter

A Citizen Report Card is prepared basing on the feedback of people

76 p.c. of respondents in Baipariguda block not happy with public health centres

BHUBANESWAR: Poor healthcare continued to be a concern for people living in rural pockets of Koraput district, finds a survey.

A Citizen Report Card (CRC) was prepared basing on the feedback of people in Baipariguda and Kundra block of Koraput district on basic services provided by panchayats such as drinking water, health, sanitation, road, street lights and other women and child development programmes.

The study undertaken by city-based CYSD in collaboration with the Public Affairs Centre (PAC), Bangalore, found 76 per cent of respondents in Baipariguda block showed their dissatisfaction over standard of public health centres (PHC).

Similarly, 58 per cent of persons interviewed during the survey in Kundra block said they were not happy the way PHC functioned. Condition of roads in the two blocks was also bad, people said during the survey.

However, majority of people were happy with the mid-day meal being provided in schools.

Showing satisfaction over availability of drinking water, people in six gram panchayats in two blocks said they needed more tubewells to be dug in their area so that their access to drinking water improved.

“The access to drainage is minimal at 8 per cent while there is no garbage clearance facility in the Panchayats.

Sanitary latrines are found with very few households (12 per cent),” CYSD said.

It said interestingly the awareness and participation in palli sabha was high at over 70 per cent whereas the same was lacking with gram sabha.

The Citizen Report Card was presented at workshop organised here.

Director of State panchayati raj department J. P. Agrawala, engineer in chief, water and sanitation mission Budhimanta Hota and representatives from Orissa Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) were present on the occasion.
