Congenital deficiency turns a curse for two boys

Special Correspondent

Hospital Superintendent diagnoses it as a dermal problem

They cannot stand even normal heat for long

Only treatment is they will have to stay in a cool place

GUNTUR: They are not from any cold country, but for Dariya Vali, 11, and Abdul Basha, 9, sons of a daily wage labourer from Chilakaluripet, winter months are the best. They cannot withstand even a couple of hours of normal heat.

A congenital deficiency of the two sons of Sheik Bazha and Malin Bee makes their life miserable and their upbringing unaffordable, taking it beyond the means of their parents.

A visit to the Government General Hospital here has, however, given them some respite and clarity on the ailment with hospital Superintendent D. Phanibhushan diagnosing it as a dermal problem. District Collector B. Venkatesham on Friday gave a ray of hope to the couple by sanctioning pension for both the children and Rs.15,000 in aid to help the parents buy an air-cooler at home.

On GGH dermatologist K. Sowjanya’s recommendation a 75 per cent disability certificate was issued to the boys, which would help them get some benefits from the State government. The peculiarity of the physical condition of these children is that they do not have hair on their body and there is absence of sweating.

This has resulted in an abnormal rise in their body temperature even in normal room temperatures.

“They have to be protected by repeatedly placing a wet cloth on their body and head during the summer months,” laments their mother.

No sweat glands

The dermatologist said that the absence of sweat glands leads to this condition and there was no treatment available so far for this except keeping them in a cool place.
