Multi-lot parking project set for launch today

‘Delay in obtaining requisite clearances from all the bodies concerned’

The entire construction costs would be financed by private participants

NEW DELHI: Work on the New Delhi Municipal Council’s first multi-lot parking project at Sarojini Nagar will be launched with a prayer ceremony this Monday, a year after its foundation stone was laid by Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken in December 2007.

The ceremony is being organised by project concessionaire DLF after having successfully received necessary approvals from the Delhi Urban Arts Commission, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Pollution Control Committee.

The project that entails providing an automated car parking system for 824 cars would be coming up near the Sarojini Nagar market over 3787.63 square metres.

An NDMC official said: “The main issue behind the delay was obtaining the requisite clearances before which the excavation work could not go ahead. However, now that we have got the go-ahead from all the bodies concerned, work is expected to begin on the site at Sarojini Nagar this week.”

The entire construction, operations and maintenance costs would be financed by the private participants who will be allowed to charge a maximum of Rs.10 per hour per vehicle for the parking facility. The source of revenue for the private participant will be commercial utilisation of 25 per cent of the total built-up area during the concession period, which is 30 years. The estimated cost of the project is about Rs.80 crore.

Apart from this project, the civic body’s has two other multi-lot parking projects planned on Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Kasturba Gandhi Marg. An initiative of the NDMC Projects Department, all three projects have been developed on a public-private partnership model and are being built with the aim to decongest roads and improve utilisation of available space.

While the approval seeking proceedings are still on for the Baba Kharak Singh Marg project, the Kasturba Gandhi Marg project is caught in an impasse between the Land and Development Office and the NDMC. Gandhi Marg project talks are going on between the L&DO authorities and the NDMC to decide whether land acquisition has to be undertaken at the commercial rate or parking rate. Regular correspondence and formalities are being exchanged to sort out the matter between the two government agencies so that there is no objection from any side,” added the NDMC official.
