Delhi to get a brand new herbal garden soon

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

NEW DELHI: Counted among the greenest capitals of the world, Delhi will soon get a brand new herbal garden, its own arboretum and a bambusetum as part of the State Department’s Environment and Forest conservation and environment protection projects.

To be set up at Garhi Mandu, the new project is aimed at giving Delhiites a feel of the “Delhi greens” and to help them understand the native species.

“While the herbal garden is a useful green input for the Capital, the arboretum -- an area planted with many types of trees for study, display and preservation – will give to the city dwellers a chance to see and study its native species. The idea is to introduce Delhiites to a first hand view of the native species and provide educational and research institution a chance to find all the species that are native to the Capital at one place,” said State Environment and Forest Secretary J. K. Dadoo.

The project at Garhi Mandu will also house a bamboo conservation centre which will showcase a large variety of bamboos.

Welcoming the latest project by the Department, Professor Emeritus at Delhi University C.R. Babu said: “This latest project is a good addition and we are glad that Delhi will get something of this kind now. However, the Department should ensure that both the herbal garden and the arboretum are situated not in the low lying area of Garhi Mandu. Since this is a low lying area there is a tendency especially during monsoon season for the place to get flooded. This would not allow a herbal garden to come up and also stagnant water is not good for bamboos either.”
