NEW DELHI: By January 2009, the enrolment figure of Indira Gandhi National Open University is expected to cross 20 lakh, according to its Vice-Chancellor Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai. The percentage of enrolment at present amounts to over 15 per cent of the entire higher education enrolment in the country. IGNOU now has 62 regional centres and 2,053 study centres. “With the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-2012) in progress, we are working on the ambitions target to ensure education access rate to 15 per cent in the entire country from the current 10 per cent,” the Vice-Chancellor said. On the cards are community collages through virtual campus, which will be on extension of community radio movement. Also, IGNOU will soon start 400 new community colleges to add to the existing 200 which are fast catching up with the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) movement. Once completed, the nation will vibrate with activities at the grassroots level with communities not only as the target audience but also as the broadcasters, he said. IGNOU has taken the latest ICT and satellite capability to effectively disseminate open and distance learning.
