Letters to the Editor
The people of Jammu and Kashmir have voted for peace. They have spoken against violence and want development activities to move faster. Coalition governments have become the order of the day. One hopes the coalition that comes to power in the State will live up to the people’s expectations. N.R. Ramachandran, Udhagamandalam The J&K elections have dealt a body blow to the separatist forces, which sought to exploit the so-called anger of the Kashmiris against India. The people have reposed their faith in the democratic exercise and rejected the idea of ‘azadi’ espoused by pro-Pakistan elements. The Election Commission deserves to be congratulated on conducting the elections, which were largely trouble-free because they were conducted in seven phases ensuring an adequate security presence in all regions.Abraham Joseph, New Delhi Notwithstanding the Amarnath Shrine Board land transfer issue which rocked J&K in June, the people have reiterated their faith in democracy. The government that comes to power should fulfil their aspirations. If it uses the opportunity to win over the people’s hearts, India need not worry about the Kashmir issue. The Kashmiris themselves will resolve it.S. Karthik, New Delhi The successful completion of the elections in J&K has proved that the secessionists have lost the people’s confidence. Ordinary citizens do not want turbulence of any kind. It is a handful of leaders with their selfish agenda who cause harm to the polity. The people of J&K deserve applause for enabling democracy to triumph amid difficult circumstances. Ranvijay Singh, Gorakhpur
