KARAIKUDI: There is a growing demand for skilled workers in the country that looks at sustaining 8-9 per cent of growth, so the Centre has planned to start world-class polytechnics and industrial training institutes, especially in areas where there is a concentration of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and minorities, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said on Sunday. Addressing students of the Government Industrial Training Institute at Amaravathipudur near here, he said the skills taught in ITIs and polytechnics should match the requirements of industry. The Union Cabinet had given its nod for starting 1,000 polytechnics as skill development institutes across the country, and 700 of them would be opened by the governmentand the rest would come up under public-private partnership. To upgrade the facilities in the ITIs, funds would be provided for improvements and construction of hostels for women. Rs. 3.5 cr. sanctionedThe Union government had sanctioned Rs. 3.5 crore for upgrading the facilities at the Amaravathipudur ITI. A sum of Rs.1.66 crore had been released for infrastructure development on July 31, he said, hoping that the money would reach the institute soon. Mr. Chidambaram wanted the students to aspire for world-class skills. “There is nothing called second-rate.” He felt that there was a need to have more ITIs in Sivaganga district that has only two at present.
