COLOMBO: At least eight people were killed and 17 injured as a suspected LTTE cadre exploded himself outside the Civil Defence Force (CDF) office on the outskirts here on Sunday. As per the police, the blast took place near a church in Wattala at 9 a.m. An Army officer and six CDF personnel were among those killed while 13 CDF personnel and four civilians were injured. The police said the suicide bomber had exploded himself when security personnel stopped him at the CDF office. The attack came amid intense fighting in the north. Separately, fighter jets attacked identified LTTE “resistance positions” South of Mullathivu. Air Force spokesperson Janaka Nanayakkara said the strikes were carried out in support of the advancing troops.
