‘No clarity on how long slowdown will last’

Staff Reporter

’VIJAYAWADA: It is not clear how long the present recession in the overall industry, including the IT field, will continue, but well-qualified people need not worry about prospects at all, says D. Janakiram, a professor at IIT Madras.

Delivering a lecture on “Clouding services and service-oriented architecture” organised by the computer science department of the VR Siddhartha Engineering College on Monday, Prof. Janakiram said it was true that a lot of concern was being expressed at the present situation following global meltdown. Under the circumstances, nobody would be able to predict the future course of this crisis and people should be prepared for any kind of development.

Prof. Janakiram pointed out that the recession and its consequences were, indeed, painful for many, but those with strong fundamentals would remain stable considering the ever increasing relevance of IT in improving performance of organisations and systems. He said people involved in the software industry should now cope with this new crisis by getting busy with enhancing their skills through further education.

He said that it would be difficult to imagine everyday life without computers.

The two-day international conference organised by the department of computer science and engineering on “Emerging technologies” attracted papers from 50 people.
