“Voluntary organisations should help district administration”

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: “Voluntary agencies have a significant role in development of health of the people. They should take to supplementing the efforts of the government,” Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said on Sunday.

Speaking at the silver jubilee and 25th Charternite celebrations of the Lions Club of Madras Velachery, he said voluntary agencies should reach the poor and needy in villages.

A majority of our people were living in rural areas.

The task of alleviating their living standards was imperative, he said. “We need close coordination at all levels to bring about socio-economic development. Voluntary organisations should work in close coordination with the district administration.”

Appreciating the Lions Clubs , he said it was commendable that the Lions Club of Velachery ran an eye hospital and medicare centre at Velachery catering to the health needs of the people for the past 25 years, a release said.
