Traditional start: Uthradom Tirunal Marthanda Varma, head of the royal family of the erstwhile Travancore, inaugurating the silver jubilee celebrations of the ‘Souhrudom’ magazine at Kaippuzha Vadakkemuri Puthenkoickal Palace in Pandalam on Sunday. PATHANAMTHITTA: Apart from their informative role, family in-house magazines play a part in strengthening bonds. ‘Souhrudom,’ the in-house magazine of the royal family of the erstwhile ‘Pandalam kingdom,’ celebrates its silver jubilee this year and stands apart in this age of blogs and intranet. ‘Souhrudom’ started off as a humble initiative by a journalist-member of the family, M. Ravi Varma, in January 1984. “The secret of success and sustenance of this family magazine lies in the dedication to the cause by its founder-editor who is presently a Deputy Director attached to the State Information and Public Relations Department,” says P. Ramavama Raja, Pandalam Palace Managing Committee president. The Palace Club has been unfailingly bringing out ‘Souhrudom’ every month since its inception. Uthradom Tirunal Marthanda Varma, the head of the royal family of the erstwhile Travancore, inaugurated the silver jubilee celebrations at a simple function held at Kaippuzha Vadakkemuri Puthenkoickal Palace at Pandalam on Sunday. In his inaugural address, Marthanda Varma stressed the need to promote in-house magazines like ‘Souhrudom.’ According to him, in-house family magazines can be of great help in keeping the younger generation posted on the family values, traditions, customs, etc, especially in this age of nuclear families. Photo presentedMarthanda Varma also presented to the Palace Club a photograph of Sabarimala, taken by him during his visit to the forest temple way back in 1938. Ravi Varma says the magazine has helped in ensuring better communication between family members. The eldest member of the Pandlam royal family, Lakshmi Thampuratti, lit 25 earthen lamps on the occasion. Actor Kaviyur Ponnamma, R.R. Varma, royal designate who accompanies the Thiruvabharanam to Sabarimala this year; G. Sasi Varma, Girishkumar Varma, T. Sukumara Varma, reception committee office-bearers also spoke.
