BHUBANESWAR: Nandankanan Biological Park (NBP) on Monday said it would prepare a master plan for the next 20 years with a vision to transform Nandankanan to a world-class zoo.

“We look to future where our zoo continues to grow as an outstanding model of education, conservation and research and continue to build enduring relationship between people and wildlife,” said NBP director Ajit Pattnaik on occasion of zoo’s 49th foundation day celebration here.

Annual report of NBP for the year 2008-09 and newsletter of Nandankanan Zoo School “Panchatantra” were released here on the occasion. “We provide top class care for the animals entrusted to us through animal welfare, health care, ethical standards and excellence in animal husbandry, with focus on enclosure enrichments. With this, the death rate has been reduced to less than 4 per cent, one of the lowest amongst the Indian Zoo,” NBP director claimed.

He said, “Our conservation activities this year were wide ranging, from the successful breeding of 10 endangered species to the breeding of Indian Pangolin and in house designing of a customized breeding enclosure.”

Based on the prototype a conservation breeding centre for Indian Pangolin was set up, which would be the first of its kinds in the world, Mr. Pattnaik said.

“We are also setting up a vulture conservation breeding centre. This would be our major venture,” he said. School children and top forest officials were present on the occasion.
