This Day That Age
Six West European countries will take the first step on New Year’s Day towards turning themselves into a single unit of 164 million people which by 1974 should rival the United States and the Soviet Union as a world economic power. By then the six States – France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg – expect their commerce and trade to be organised like that of one country, with no customs barriers and complete freedom of movement of workers and resources. In spite of the enormous economic changes involved, the European Economic Community, better known as the Common Market, is regarded by its architects as primarily a way to the political union of “Little Europe,” bringing an end to 1,000 years of rivalry and warfare. Reuter correspondents in the capitals of the six nations sent these reports on December 28.
