News Analysis
>>The heading of a Bangalore report “Intruder into Sub-Area Commander’s official quarters shot dead” (December 29, 2008) was misleading as the text said, in the seventh paragraph, that the youth, who suffered a bullet wound in his abdomen, scaled the compound wall and got into a waiting taxi. >>The sixth paragraph of a report “Police custody for Ajmal till January 6 in car hijack case” (December 26, 2008) referred to K.P. Raghuvanshi as “Additional Director General of Police (Railways)”. A reader pointed out that he was chief of the ATS. The Staff Reporter clarifies that K.P. Raghuvanshi only holds the additional charge of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). He has not been appointed to the post officially. As the case referred to in the story was registered at a railway police station, his designation was mentioned as ADGP (Railways). >>The fifth paragraph of an article “A tale of two statements” (Op-Ed, December 25, 2008) was “While there is no doubt that Mr. Antulay’s statement was motivated by politics rather than a genuine concern on how and why three senior ATS officers were shot dead at one go within hours of the start of the 60-hour long terrorist drama ….” Only Hemant Karkare was the ATS chief and the other two were not part of the ATS. The sentence should have said three senior police officers, including the ATS chief Karkare.
>>An item in “Snapshots” titled “A stray victim of the terror attack” (December 26, 2008) said that among those who suffered bullet injuries during the terror attack at the CST railway station on November 11 was Sheroo, a stray dog. The Mumbai terror attacks were on November 26, 2008. The error was in some editions. >>The Hindu calendar for 2009, which formed the last page of The Hindu-Magazine (December 28, 2008) had an error in some editions. Three months (February, March and November) did not have the date “27”, but “26” was repeated. Some readers have pointed this. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
