Opposition lashes out at Congress Congress accused of handing over land to builders VIJAYAWADA: The opposition parties staged a walkout from the general body of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Monday in protest against the proposal to develop the piece of land belonging to the VMC at Labbipet on Private Public Partnership (PPP) basis. The State Government issued a memo on August 29, 2008 stating that it was not possible to withdraw GO 1202, which annulled the resolution adopted by the VMC general body on February 8, 2007 against the PPP proposal. The Government maintained that there was no scope in the Act for reviewing the GO, which was issued based on Section 679-A of the HMC Act. The Corporation officials then placed the memo before the general body. The Opposition parties came down heavily on the ruling Congress and alleged that it hoodwinked the people by remaining a mute spectator to the GOs issued by the Government. Residential housesCPI (M) floor leader Ch. Babu Rao said that the ruling party was handing over the Corporation’s lands to benefit a few builders and organisations. A lot of corruption and scam had taken place in the proposed construction of residential houses at Brindavan Colony in PPP mode. The Congress leaders tried to convince the Opposition on the issue, but in vain. It led to chaotic situation in the meeting, and the opposition parties staged a walkout in protest against the PPP.
