Recast of CPI(M) panel in capital

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram district committee of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) will be recast.

The party State committee, which began a three-day meeting here on Monday, decided to revamp the district committee on the basis of the finding of a three-member panel appointed by it that the election in the district was marred by factionalism.

The committee had also found the election in Kollam district to be coloured by factionalism, but has not decided to go in for a wholesale revamp.

The Thiruvananthapuram district committee election had seen those owing allegiance to Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan getting trounced.

In Kollam, the situation was the reverse, though not to the same extent as in Thiruvananthapuram.

The party will convene a district-level plenum for reconstituting the Thiruvananthapuram district committee.

Those who had got on factional basis would be dropped.

Those who had been included on the panel presented by the outgoing district committee but defeated in the balloting would be accommodated in the reconstituted committees.

The revamp would be subject to the approval of the party Central committee, a CPI(M) release said here on Monday.

The release said there was ‘naked violation’ of the guidelines issued by the CPI(M) Polit Bureau for the conduct of the conferences to ensure organisational integrity of the party.

In Kollam too, the contest was marked by factionalism.

This was something that a revolutionary party could hardly approve.

As a Marxist-Leninist party that believed in rectification of mistakes, the decision would go a long way to strengthen the party and to expand its influence, the release added.

The State committee meeting, which was attended by party general secretary Prakash Karat, is expected to discuss the fallout of the setback that the party suffered in the Shoranur municipal byelections and the growing dissidence in different parts of north Kerala.

The party had suffered a severe loss of face following the defeat of its candidates in the byelections.

Mr. Karat presented the report on the national political situation.

CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan presented the work report at the meeting chaired by secretariat member M. A. Baby.
