GUNTUR: Total quantum of blood needed in Guntur district in 2009-10 financial year has been projected at 45,000 units coming from voluntary blood donors, for which the APSACS proposes to involve youth in a big way to promote awareness among them. On the second day of the three-day pilot grassroots level action plan preparation exercise taken up in Guntur district for the first time in the country, the meeting identified the need for DNA-PCR kits at all blood banks for organising quick HIV test to reduce new infections through transfusion. The need for replacement blood donations at Government blood banks would be increased to 40 per cent from current 20 per cent and issuing blood only from voluntary donors will come down to 60 per cent from current 80 per cent. The APSACS Additional Project Director, B. Kalidas, said that the number of blood donation camps had also gone up. Youth would be encouraged to open blood donation clubs in colleges and affiliated to political parties. Training would be given to doctors on utilisation of blood concept of transfusion by developing new IEC material. Revival of insurance scheme for voluntary donors had also been proposed, Balasahayoga District Coordinator Md. Subhani said.
