Israeli aggression

The Israeli air assault on Gaza is highly condemnable and outrageous. The purported reason for this savagery is a rocket attack by the Hamas on Israel. Even if it is true, the Israeli response is disproportionate and brutal. It is unfortunate that Israel is also preparing for a ground assault on the Hamas. The United Nations should intervene effectively to stop the savagery.

N. Nageswaran,

Chennai

The attacks on Gaza show that Israel has no respect for human lives. Hundreds of Palestinian civilians have died in indiscriminate Israeli air strikes. The entire international community has been unable to stop these atrocities thanks to the contemporary unipolar world order. Such injustice will only breed further hatred in the Arab world for Israel, and peace will become more elusive.

Sikander Khan,

New Delhi

It is naked aggression on the innocent people of Palestine and the whole world is watching unable to condemn the aggressor. What is the U.N. doing? What is use of a world body that cannot prevent a country from indulging in such blatant aggression? Israel came into existence after uprooting Palestinians from their land.

The U.S., Britain and France are equally guilty of uprooting them. For a people living in their own land as refugees, it is only natural to resort to armed struggle.

C. Jameel Ahmed,

Bangalore

But for Israeli acts of retaliation, the Hamas and the Arab countries would have destroyed Israel long ago. Israel’s survival depends on the constant readiness of its armed forces to respond by air, land and sea.

Air Commodore V.V. Nair (retd.),

Manipal

A belligerent Israel is again on the brink of an all-out war against the Hamas as it did against the Hezbollah in the summer of 2006. The U.S. has again played a dubious role in the Middle East crisis.

Yasir Ali Mirza,

Muzaffarpur

Whatever the cause, the military onslaught on Gaza needs to be condemned by the entire world. In an era of globalisation when the entire world is talking of eroding the contours of nation states, Israel is still unable to rise above the concept of a rigid nation state and holds on to a primitive national identity. It needs to realise that it cannot deny for long the rights Palestinians are claiming.

Raj Kumar Thakur,

Delhi
