News Analysis
>>A PTI item in “Briefly” (December 28, 2008, page 1), titled “63 convicted in Marad carnage case”, said that a special court on Saturday convicted 63 accused, in a case relating to the May 2003 communal attack at Marad beach, near Kozhikode and acquitted 73 others for want of evidence. Other reports (December 28, 2008), titled “Marad case: court finds 63 guilty”/“63 held guilty in Marad case”, gave the figure as “73 acquitted” as well. It should have been “76”, and was an editing error. >>A report “BEML Ltd. unit to come up at Kanjikode” (Kerala, December 30, 2008) said that the Centre had decided to set up a unit of BEML Ltd., formerly Bharat Earth Movers Ltd., in the Kanjikode area of Palakkad district in Kerala. A reader said that BEML is the acronym of Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. and not a new name. A news report in Business Line (October 7, 2007) says “Bharat Earth Movers Ltd is now BEML Ltd. The 45-year-old defence PSU has formally adopted its new name with effect from this month …. ” >>A cricket report on a Ranji Trophy quarterfinal, “U.P. batsmen make merry” (“Sport”, December 29, 2008), said Praveen Kumar went hammer and tongs at the bowlers, slamming five fours and a six in his unbeaten 30. The scorecard showed Praveen Kumar out for 0 while Praveen Gupta was on 30. It was Praveen Gupta who went hammer and tongs with his 30! Another cricket report on a Ranji Trophy quarterfinal, “Uthappa, Jadeja hog limelight” (“Sport”, December 27, 2008), described Ravindra Jadeja to be a leg-spinner. He is a slow left arm orthodox bowler. >>A golf report on the Rs. 80 lakh BILT Open, “Rahil Gangjee moves ahead” (“Sport”, December 27, 2008), said that Bangladesh’s Mohd. Siddikur Rahman was tied for the second slot. The scorecard gave it, incorrectly, as third place. >>A report “Chelsea on top” (“Sport”, December 27, 2008) said that reigning champion Manchester United, in its first domestic match since winning the Club World Cup in Japan, moved to within six points of top spot, with a game in hand, after winning 1-0 away to Stoke City. It should have been “two games”. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page. In "Corrections and Clarifications" (December 31, 2008), with reference to a
golf report "Rahil Gangjee moves ahead", it was said that Bangladesh's Mohd.
Siddikur Rahmkan was tied for the second slot (in the text) and that the
scorecard gave it, incorrectly, as third place. We erred! The scorecard was
right - he was tied for the third place.
