dated December 31, 1958: National independence

The Union Defence Minister, Mr. Krishna Menon, speaking at a reception given by the Foreign Affairs Association in honour of the Prime Minister of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in New Delhi on December 29, said that the Government and people of India “stand foursquare by the principle of national independence for all those who are now-a-days euphemistically called dependent, that is, under colonial rule.” Dr. Nkrumah said the States which had attained independence in Africa would be free “only when the whole of the African continent is free.”
