Manmohan for close ties with Bangladesh

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her victory in the Bangladesh elections. In a message to Ms. Hasina, Dr. Singh noted that the successful conduct of free, fair and peaceful elections was a reflection of the desire of the people of that country for democracy, development and progress.
“I am confident that under your leadership, Bangladesh will attain even greater heights,” he said.
Recalling the close and friendly relations with Dhaka, he assured Ms. Hasina of India’s commitment to further strengthening and deepening of relations with Bangladesh.
“I look forward to working with you towards this end for the mutual benefit of our two people. I also take this opportunity to invite you to visit India at your earliest possible convenience. I am asking my senior colleague External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to visit Bangladesh as soon as possible to personally convey our good wishes.”
A landmark
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs described the victory of the Awami League and the Grand Alliance as a “landmark” in democratic politics in South Asia.
“The large turnout of voters and the successful conduct of polls is a resounding victory for democracy.”
