Displays, photographs explaining the process of creating the saris have been put up
Winners of the Vintage Mysore Silk saris competition were announced BANGALORE: Want to know how the famed Mysore Silk saris are woven? A visit to Basava Bhavan, where the KSIC has organised an exhibition of the saris, will reveal the process of creating the saris that have enticed women across several generations. The exhibition was inaugurated on Tuesday by Minister for Small-scale Industries and Sericulture Venkataramanappa. Beginning with bags containing dried cocoons, followed by spools of threads, the exhibition explains how silk cloth is woven with these threads, dyed, degummed, and finally printed. Photographs have also been put up explaining the process step by step. The winners of the Vintage Mysore Silk saris competition received prizes from actor B. Saroja Devi. The competition, which has been organised since 2006, received over 100 entries this year. The three winners were given away saris worth Rs. 15,000. Ten other finalists were given away saris worth Rs. 4,200. The majority of these saris were manufactured in the 1950s. Sadanand Swamy, production manager, KSIC, told The Hindu that the saris were judged on the basis of three criteria — alpha numeric codification (the date of manufacture of the sari), sample swatches, and lastly customer declaration. The saris at the exhibition, which will go on till January 14, range from Rs. 6,500 to Rs. 1.75 lakh.
