Decked-up: A variety of greeting cards adorn the shelves of shops in Puducherry. — PUDUCHERRY: This New Year, a variety of greeting cards have adorned the shelves of shops in Puducherry, drawing the attention of both the young and the old. Despite e-mails and short message services making the process of sending a wish easy, greeting cards seem to hold their own against such hi-tech competitors. From simple cards to exquisitely designed ones, a variety of greeting cards have flooded the shops this season. Shopkeepers are happy as several customers have purchased greeting cards for the New Year. “In Puducherry, people mostly prefer to send greeting cards. Many persons, including foreigners, buy the cards for their friends and relatives living in France. A greeting card is generally preferred because it is the traditional way of sending wishes,” said a customer at a bookshop. “I like to send greeting card to my friends as it is a way to spread happiness during festive seasons. There is no better way than sending a greeting card to express our wishes. Friends will keep the cards with them for a long time,” said a doctor. Those who shop for greeting cards mostly look for quality, wordings and design. There are musical cards priced at Rs. 140. The price of cards start from Rs. six. Both the young and the old purchased cards in good number this year, said Andal Moorthy of Archies Gallery.
