KANNUR: As many as 152 people died in 1,564 road accidents that had occurred in the district in 2008. Regional Transport Officer B. Vijayakumar said here on Wednesday that two-wheelers topped in the list of vehicles involved in the road accidents from January 1 to November 31. The number of injured in the road accidents in the district was 1,583 which included 730 people who had been seriously injured. He said the number of vehicles involved in the accidents included 483 motorcycles, 366 light vehicles, 304 private buses, 273 three-wheelers, 112 lorries, 23 KSRTC buses and 114 other vehicles. Mr. Vijayakumar said that M. Prakasan, MLA, would inaugurate the Road Safety Week programme beginning here on January 1. K. Sudhakaran, MLA, District Collector Ishita Roy, Superintendent of Police S. Sreejith and municipal chairman B.P. Farooque would attend the function. It would be followed by screening of a documentary of road safety. The week-long programme included taluk-level quiz competitions, awareness classes for drivers in various centres, teachers’ training, road safety chain to be formed by members of road safety clubs and Junior Red Cross, drivers and driving school instructors.
