Lucknow: The first day of the year 2009 will go down as a significant day in the annals of Lucknow, as Hazratganj Kotwali will be completing its 100 years of existence. The Kotwali (or police station) is situated almost in the heart of the city. Giving details about the history of this police station, senior sub-inspector K.K. Dwivedi said, “The Kotwali was set up in 1909 and became operational on January 1, 1909. The first Kotwal was Linsburg. And the first crime registered here was in 1910 (44/1910) under section 337 of the Indian Penal Code.” The glorious moment will be celebrated at midnight on Wednesday night with cutting of a cake, he said. He also added that the idea of Kotwali perhaps for the first time had came up in 1907, when Hardcore Butler was appointed the Deputy Commissioner of Lucknow and at that point in time, only government servants were staying in Hazratganj. Some small traders had also set up their shops to supply items of daily use to the family of these government servants. “In order to provide security to these shopkeepers and the government servants the Kotwali was set up,” Mr. Dwivedi added. — PTI
