Bringing teachers up-to-date

The University School of Information Technology at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi is conducting a programme to train faculty members in “Wireless Communication and Mobile Computing”. Sponsored by the All-India Council for Technical Education, the two-week faculty development programme began this past week.

The programme is being attended by faculty members from different institutions such as Punjab Engineering College, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology and several affiliated institutions of the University.

“The objective is to update faculty members on the latest developments in the field of wireless communication and mobile computing and to encourage them to take up these subjects for further studies and research,” said a University official.

Eminent experts from IIT Delhi, Delhi University and IIT Roorkee spoke on different topics such as communication in mobile computing, security in wireless networks, general packet radio service and architecture.

In an effort to promote and strengthen awareness of human rights among students, the Human Rights and Law Unit of the Indian Social Institute organised a workshop at Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College in December. The programme was attended by students and teachers of the college.

“Spreading human rights literacy is a complex issue. It has to begin from the students. The education sectors have a vibrant role to play in creating an enduring culture of human rights if we are to overcome the prevailing problems of poverty, illiteracy, social injustice, inequality, terrorism, insurgency and the rising violence in society,” said Pradyumna Bora, who held the workshop.

IIT Bombay has announced a certificate programme in “Supply Chain Management” for the National Capital Region. The programme is meant for students and young working professionals who want to make a career in retail management, international trade, export, import and advanced information technology implementations.

The classes will be held at different centres located in the NCR, Greater Kailash, Raja Garden, Ashok Vihar, Gurgaon Sector 14 and Noida Sectors 16 and 64, to name a few. The last date for submitting the applications is January 8.

Admission forms will be available with the Admission Coordinator, Darshana Vyas, at register@indialearn.com .

“The teaching process will be highly interactive and comprise a blend of lectures, real life access case studies, live corporate examples, general discussions and assignments,” said a press release.

The duration of the programme is six months and classes will be held once a week through video conferencing. The evaluation will be done on a continuous basis. IIT Bombay will provide the certificate after successful completion of the programme.

Afzal Anees, a senior lecturer in the Department of Surgery at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of Aligarh Muslim University, has been elected “Fellow of International College of Surgeons”.

Dr. Anees received the award at the annual conference of the Association of Surgeons of India under the aegis of the Indian section of International College of Surgeons, U.S., at Trichy. Meanwhile, Latif Zafar Jilani, a lecturer in the Department of O rthopaedic Surgery at the medical college, has been awarded membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK.
