Four hurt in violence at Panur Patrolling intensified in sensitive areas KANNUR: A Communist Party of India(Marxist) worker was killed and three were injured in an attack by suspected Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers near Thalassery on Wednesday evening. The deceased was identified as C. Lathesh (34), CPI(M) local secretary at Thalayi in Thalassery. The police said that Lathesh was standing in front of his house at Chakyathumukku under the Thalassery police station limits when a group of RSS workers attacked him. He succumbed to injuries at the Co-operative Hospital at Thalassery. Three CPI(M) workers who were with Lathesh also suffered injuries in the attack. Condition of one of them, identified as Mohanlal, was serious. He has been rushed to the Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode. Ban ordersThe police said that prohibitory orders were clamped at Thalassery and Panur in view of the tension prevailing there following the outbreak of clashes between workers of the CPI(M) and the RSS, BJP. Tension in PanurTension prevailed near Panur on Wednesday following incidents of stabbing involving workers of rival Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in which four people were seriously injured. The trouble started on Tuesday evening when a CPI(M) worker, K.P. Sreejith (30), was stabbed allegedly by BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers at Mokery, near Panur. An employee in a local cooperative society, Sreejith was attacked while returning from work. He had been admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. StabbedThe tension escalated on Wednesday when a group of three suspected CPI(M) workers barged into the house of BJP worker V.P. Nanu (62) at Kurara and stabbed him. The incident, apparently in retaliation for the attack on the CPI(M) worker, occurred at 2 p.m. Having suffered serious stab injuries in his hands and one of his legs, he had been taken to the medical college hospital. Another CPI(M) worker, M. Ravi (38), a headload worker, was attacked by a group of alleged BJP workers at Thuvakkunnu, near North Poyilur, at 2.45 p.m. The incident was followed by a retaliatory attack on BJP worker M. Rajeesh (35) at nearby Cheruparamba an hour later. The police said that Rajeesh ran to the house of a Janata Dal worker, identified as Krishnan, when he came under attack. Krishnan suffered minor injuries when he tried to protect Rajeesh from the attackers, the police said. Ravi and Rajeesh were also rushed to the medical college hospital. Meanwhile, police patrolling was strengthened in the sensitive areas under the Panur and Kolavallur police station limits. Senior police officers led by Superintendent of Police S. Sreejith were camping in the area.
