BANGALORE/SHIMOGA: Even as the power consumption in the State is increasing, the Cabinet sub-committee on power, headed by Energy Minister K.S. Eshwarappa, has decided to continue the present arrangement of supplying round-the-clock power to urban areas and 12 hours of power a day to villages for some more time. The sub-committee, which met in Bangalore on Tuesday, took stock of the power availability and supply situation in the State and the steps to be taken to tide over power shortage for the next two months. The 12-hour supply to villages comprises six hours of three-phase power (on which the irrigation pump sets can operate) and six hours of single-phase power. Power tariffMr. Eshwarappa told The Hindu that the five Escoms in the State would not seek any increase in tariff this year. He said the government was trying to convince private power generators, from whom it is buying additional power to tide over power shortage, to reduce the power cost in the wake of substantial fall in the naphtha prices in international market. Mr. Eshwarappa told presspersons in Gajanur that it would be possible to purchase power at Re. 1 a unit when the proposed hydel project at Shivanasamudra in Mandya district, with an installed capacity of 230 MW, would be implemented.
