CPI(M) divergence: new outfit mooted

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: M.R. Murali, who led a bunch of dissidents from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) to victory in the byelections held last month for eight out of nine wards of the Shoranur municipality under the banner of the Janakiya Vikasana Samiti, told a news conference here on Wednesday that the Samiti proposed to convert itself into a pro-people Left alternative with the involvement of political groups functioning in different parts of the State on the plank of anti-globalisation positions.

Mass organisations would also be formed as part of the process, he said.

Mr. Murali, who had earlier in the day called on Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan seeking his intervention to facilitate swearing-in by the newly elected councillors, said a dialogue was on among like-minded individuals and groups in different parts of the State, such as Kozhikode, Palakkad and Thrissur, on a new political formation.

Besides those who have left the CPI(M), the new formation also would have persons from other political parties in the State, he added.

He claimed that moves similar to those in Shoranur could be expected in some of the southern districts also.

Asked whether he and his colleagues, reported to be supporters of the Chief Minister, wanted Mr. Achuthanandan to lead them, he said that Mr. Achuthanandan would be welcome to do so.

He claimed that the CPI(M) leadership was forced to order revamp of the party’s Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam district committees on account of the Samiti’s poll victory in Shoranur.

Mr. Murali alleged that the swearing in of the new councillors was being delayed to facilitate horse-trading in the municipal council.

The Chief Minister, he said, had promised him and other councillors that he would look into their memorandum and instruct those concerned to take appropriate action in the matter.
