Unwanted handsets, accessories can be cast in bins placed across the country Bangalore: Nokia India is launching a campaign on January 1 to recycle e-Waste from mobile phone handsets, and accessories. The ‘Take back’ campaign, which is to be rolled out nationwide in a phased manner, aims to encourage mobile phone users to deposit unwanted handsets and other accessories in bins placed at Nokia Priority Dealers and Nokia Care Centres in Bangalore, according to a company release. About 1,300 recycling bins have been installed across the country. PromiseNokia has promised to plant a tree for every handset, regardless of brand, that is dropped into these bins. The company said a consumer survey conducted by Nokia across 6,500 respondents in 13 countries, including India, revealed that although each person on average owned about five phones, very few of these are actually recycled after they are discarded. Only 17 per cent of those surveyed in India knew that used phones could be recycled. The company said all the material in the phones can be recovered and used for making new products, or for generating energy. D. Shivakumar, Vice-President and Managing Director, Nokia India, said the company’s “unique contribution” lies in the fact that “Take Back” is open to all brands of mobile phones and accessories.
