Home Minister K. Jana Reddy inaugurating new building of police station at Bapatla in Guntur district on Wednesday. BAPATLA (GUNTUR): Home Minister K. Jana Reddy on Wednesday said coastal surveillance would beefed up in the State in the wake of terror strikes in Mumbai and the State would soon get four more Marine Police Stations in addition to the existing six. Addressing a meeting after formally inaugurating the Marine Police Station complex at Suryalanka, a coastal village 5 k.m away from here, constructed at a cost of Rs.35 lakh, he said coastal surveillance systems would be enhanced so as to extend the surveillance up to 12 nautical miles into the sea and fight with intruders. All the Marine Police Stations would be fully equipped with the latest mechanised speed boats and armoury. The Home Ministry was also looking into the staff shortage problem and would beef up the existing strength at Bapatla from 15 to 50 and sought the support of fishermen in the surveillance. Referring to the tragic death of Swapnika, he termed the incident as unfortunate and pointed out that the State Government had spent close to Rs.12 lakh towards her treatment. He said stringent measures would be put in place to prevent occurrence of similar incidents.
