dated January 1, 1959: Awakening in Africa

The Prime Minister of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, addressing a public meeting under the auspices of the Indian Council of World Affairs in New Delhi on December 29, said that if the foreign Governments “who still control the lives of millions of Africans in their own country” denied a peaceful evolution of a new and independent Africa, then “the prospect fills me with fear” because great political forces had now been brought into play all over Africa. The foreign governments concerned, he said, should realise that the African was now politically awakened and must be recognised as a fellow human being and he must be given the same opportunities for advancement as any other member of the world community.
