Letters to the Editor
Your editorial, ‘Getting banks to lend’ (December 31), comes at a time when the overkill mentality is creeping the lending institutions in India and elsewhere. The current global economic meltdown makes us feel that neither the unregulated free market capitalism nor the Soviet style socialism works. India can set an example and show the world that a cautiously regulated economic system can weather such storms with the government playing a facilitator. Overregulation and lack of credit for SMEs and the manufacturing sector will deter the much-needed growth for India. Seshadri S. Ramkumar, Texas You have discussed only the process of lending by banks. But what about repayment by borrowers? Since huge amounts have not been repaid in time, several leading banks have collapsed. On what terrain will they start lending once again? They can at best make polite appeals to the borrowers to repay as early as possible — on the lines of the appeal India is making to Pakistan to dismantle the terror structures on its soil. B.R. Kumar, Chennai
