News Analysis
>>The Congress will support the National Conference, not the National Congress as was mentioned in the first sentence of a report “NC-Congress to share power” (December 31, 2008, page 1). >>A sentence in the first paragraph of a report “Pranab: no provocative action by India” (December 31, 2008) was “Instead, Pakistan would do well to honour the commitments made by its then and present head of state in 2004 and again this year, he [External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee] said.” The then head of state in 2004 and the present one are two different persons, so it was incorrect to club them together. In the same report, the eight paragraph said “Please fulfil your commitments and do the job you are expected to do. You have not committed not once but twice about stopping terrorism from Pakistani soil,” he said. The first “not” is out of place. >>In “Corrections and Clarifications” (December 31, 2008), with reference to a golf report “Rahil Gangjee moves ahead”, it was said that Bangladesh’s Mohd. Siddikur Rahmkan was tied for the second slot (in the text) and that the scorecard gave it, incorrectly, as third place. We erred! The scorecard was right — he was tied for the third place. >>In a Makarand Waingankar column “Play league matches at neutral venues” (“Sport”, December 30, 2008) it was said that in “the Delhi–Orissa game, Delhi fearing getting relegated (eventually they were) had a green top for Ishant Sharma to take advantage. Though Delhi won, the game got over on the second day itself.” The Sports Desk clarifies that the reference was to Delhi — being the defending champions, failed to qualify for the quarter-finals — having been knocked out of the super league. >>The second paragraph of a report “Kore does Ganguly a favour” (“Sport”, December 30, 2008) said that the second-seeded Parimarjan Negi was the overnight sole leader. It was an error as Negi shared the overnight lead with Ganguly. (The report was on the penultimate round of the National ‘A’ chess championship.) It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
