Chidambaram to review security in Assam

Special Correspondent

Guwahati: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram is scheduled to arrive here on the New Year’s Day on a two-day visit.

He will review the counter-insurgency situation and the prevailing law-and-order situation at a meeting of the Unified Command scheduled for Friday.

The meeting is expected to review the situation in the Bodo heartland in view of the recent split in the outlawed National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) and the security measures required to thwart possible strikes by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in the run up to the Republic Day.

There is confusion among the security top brass in the State as the Centre has not communicated its decision on extending the ceasefire with the NDFB. The ceasefire is due to expire on Wednesday night.

“We have not received any direction from the Central government and therefore it is still unclear whether the ceasefire will be extended or not,” said a senior official of the State Home Department, who did not wish to be quoted.

“If the ceasefire lapses, then we will be bound to arrest NDFB cadres presently staying in designated camps if they try to come out. Till a decision is announced by the Centre, they will be confined to the designated camps.”
